Jelleestone - aka YOUNG POET
Was born in Toronto, to Jamaican parents, grew up splitting time between his mother’s place in Rexdale and his father’s home in the Bronx. Introduced to Hiphop in New York City during his formative years, he formed rap groups with his friends (Poet x Prophet "PnP" and Toronto underground trailblazers O.R.B "Original Rude Boyz")
He took the first step towards carving out his name as a solo artist scoring a national underground hit collaborating with producer Richard "2Rude" Combs titled "When You’re Hot, You’re Hot" released on IllVibe Records.
Jelleestone broke big time in 2001 after signing a joint venture deal with Warner Brothers Records and his own imprint Rex Entertainment Inc.
His first release, "Money Part 1", co-produced by Jon "Rabbi" Levine of The Philosopher Kings, was second most added song at radio in the U.S. and climbed the Billboard Hot 100 charts internationally. He went on to release his Rex Entertainment, Inc/Warner Brother Records debut entitled "Jelleestone Thirteen" later that year.
After deciding to switch labels and executive produce his second studio album himself. He began working with a talented yet unknown engineer/producer Noah "40" Shebib. Which resulted in the Rex Entertainment/BlackSmith/Universal release titled
"The Hood Is Here".
This sophomore project featured Canada's pop princess Nelly Furtado on the Daft Punk inspired, and "Best Rap Video" nominated single "Friendamine" remix.
Jelleestone has been nominated for song writing and radio awards as well as being "Best New Solo Artist" and "Best Rap Recording" nominee by Canada’s prestigious Juno Awards. He was also awarded the coveted MMVA "Best Rap Video" trophy for "Who Dat".
A collaboration with dancehall sensation ElephantMan.
The album also featured, the Grammy award winner Sidney "Omen" Brown produced title track "The Hood Is Here", and "The Hood Is Here" remix. Bringing together deep rooted, and longtime rival neighbourhoods (five of the city's most notorious).
Coupled with three Aaron A. co-directed and self produced videos which took cameras directly into all of the affected areas.
Jelleestone gave viewers one of the first, and most honest looks, into the often denied existence of Canada's "hoods".
In short, "THIH" Lp ultimately served to cement Jelleestone, as one the the city's favourite sons, and despite the "soft" sounding name, one of most credible street-bred emcees to ever emerge from Canada!
